When to put on summer tires
Winter tires are mandatory in Quebec until March 15. After that, CAA-Québec recommends switching to summer tires around mid-April, or once temperatures stay above 7°C. Studded tires are allowed until May 1.
Why not keep your winter tires in summer?
Longer braking: on hot, wet pavement, a winter tire can need up to 26% more distance to stop than a summer tire, according to CAA-Québec.
Fast wear: the soft rubber of winter tires wears quickly in the heat.
Handling: the vehicle responds less well in an emergency manoeuvre.
Fuel use: more rolling resistance means more fuel.
